job outlook

Expected growth in federal government spending for physics and astronomy research should
increase the need for physicists and astronomers, especially at colleges and universities and national laboratories.

Federal spending is the primary source of physics- and astronomy-related research funds,
especially for basic research. Additional federal funding for energy and for advanced manufacturing
research is expected to increase the need for physicists. Funding growth for astronomy research is expected to
be smaller because of the limited applications of work in astronomy.
